WOLVES LANE Goes Solar!

Solar Power Celebration!

On 20th July this summer, site users and volunteers at Wolves Lane held a celebration of their newly installed solar panels!

Solar Power Fund Campaign 2018

This was the culmination of a huge effort to raise the funds and install the panels to make the Wolves Lane site more sustainable. Local food growing and energy generation will play an important part in our move to a low carbon future.

Generating Electricity

The panels will generate electricity for use on site. It is a 12.4 kiloWatt hour peak system and since installation has generated 5.27 megaWatt hours and saved just over 2,000 kilogrammes of carbon emissions (equivalent to planting 7 trees). Most of the electricity will be used in the Palm House, where water pumps use a lot of energy.

Thank you Drake Renewables!

The installation work was carried out for free by a local resident who runs solar installation company Drakes Renewables. There are 31 panels on two roofs and it is an innovative installation using 400 W panels imported from Canada.

Crowdfunding and Celebrity Supporters!

The money for the panels was raised through a crowdfund run by Spacehive for the Mayor of London’s office. The panels were paid for by local residents (including members of the Friends of Wolves Lane) and local rap artist Jhus. Generous donations from the Mayor of London and Haringey Council will add to the project by paying for insulation materials and fees for legal and electrical work.

Who’s at Wolves Lane?

Wolves Lane Plant Centre https://wolveslane.org/, was formerly the plant nursery for Haringey Council. The site is still owned by Haringey Council and is leased to the Wolves Lane Consortium (Organiclea, Crop Drop and the Ubele Initiative) and is growing a huge harvest of local food that supports a local veg bag scheme (Crop Drop, https://www.cropdrop.co.uk/), a London restaurant (Ottolenghi), food for homeless people (Edible London, https://ediblelondon.weebly.com/) and Black Rootz . Local not-for-profit Wolves Lane Flower Company also rent space onsite (https://www.wolveslaneflowercompany.com/).

Funding Goal Achieved!

Funding Goals Achieved!

Thanks to all our wonderful supporters, we have made our Solar Power Funding Campaign target – and more! Those extra donations will also help us make a start on works to the cafe with the ‘over-funding’ plan.

The final amount raised is currently being totted up, and will be announced soon.

Big thank yous!

This Campaign could not have been a success without the generous support of our friends, supporters and community.

We’d also like to thank Haringey Council for £2000, which will go partly on the solar power and insulation project and partly on urgent repairs to our buildings.

Singer and Rapper, JHUS kindly donated £4000 to the fund, and the Mayor of London Fund has also donated £7500 towards our campaign goals.

Open Sundays return – January 6, 2019!

The site and the palm house are open as usual from this Sunday January 6th, 2019, 12 noon till 4pm.

Palm Crew Volunteer Sessions – from January 8th

As usual, we’ll be dropping in as volunteer workers, keeping a close eye on the weather to make sure the plants are warm enough, and will continue to hold our Palm Crew volunteer sessions on Tuesdays, where everyone is welcome to join – watch this blog for reminders!

We look forward to see you in the New Year!

How will the Solar Power & Cafe Campaign funds be used?

The Ubele team says:

” Our plan is to provide:-

  • * Solar electricity to heat the Wolves Lane Palm House, to preserve a much loved public amenity with hothouse plants, koi carp and terrapins for local families to visit and for schools to have nature study lessons
  • * Sustainable heating for the café, an educational and community meeting space
  • * Insulation and innovative heat retention measures like compost ‘hot boxes’ to minimise need for artificial heat
  • * Spare power to sell to the grid to fund other activities on site

The Wolves Lane site:-

  • * Grows organic food, for sale and free for homeless people’s projects
  • * Houses an organic box scheme
  • * Trains volunteers in horticulture
  • * Runs school visits to study plants and food growing
  • * Provides an event space for community groups
  • * Is open to the public on Sundays with sales of plants, food produced on site, cooked food stalls and bike repair service

What we’ll deliver:

  • Use renewable energy to heat the Palm House and cafe
  • Restore an educational and social space for the local community  “

Many ways to donate

Bank transfer

Can people donate to the solar power appeal without using a debit card on Spacehive? YES!

An alternative which is just like giving to any other good cause has been set up.Although Ubele is the chosen member of the Wolves Lane consortium to handle the crowdfund funds, to ease their admin load we have set up a conventional donation arrangement via a trusted intermediary, the community gardeners’ group Growing in Haringey. Pamela Harling is its treasurer.

  1. Just send your money to the Growing in Haringey bank account which is: ‘Growing in Haringey’ , Sort code 08-92-99, Account number 65409413.
  2. Please label your transfer – on the payin slip or its online equivalent – as <yourname> CROWDF.
  3. Then send an e-mail to Pamela at pjharling@hotmail.com saying ‘I have paid £x into the GIH account for the crowdfund’.

Cheques are also welcome – please write your phone number and/or e-mail on the back and give them to Pamela, Islay, Anne or Loretta when you see us on site.

Debit Card – donate at spacehive.com/wolveslanepalmhouse !!!
